Information for people interested in Mid-England Barrow who live overseas.

Why is it important to make plans?

It is important that everyone makes plans in the event of their death, to ensure that your wishes are carried out. In addition, it removes the stress of ‘what you would have wanted’ from those you leave behind during an already emotional time. You can use the ‘funeral planner’ document on this website to help you consider all your options. Once you have documented your wishes, make sure someone close to you knows where to find them.

I hadn’t thought about what would happen if I die overseas, why should I?

Whilst many of us would love the option of living overseas, I’m certain a great number of people would choose ‘home’ as their final resting place. Having moved overseas, there may not be an obvious location for placing ashes. What better spot than a beautiful area of English countryside, less than 20 miles from the centre of the country with good road and rail links for anyone who may wish to visit. The cost of burial or cremation in the UK is rising, however by reserving a niche at Mid-England Barrow cost increases can be avoided.

I have no plans to visit the UK in the foreseeable future. How can I sort everything with Mid-England Barrow without visiting?

We appreciate it may not be convenient to visit us to choose your niche at the time you are wishing to reserve it. We will provide you with a niche map, a layout of the Barrow, and we can discuss in as much detail as you like where you would like your niche located. We will then select your niche, and reserve it for you. However, should you change your mind, or visit at a later date and prefer a different one to that chosen, we will happily change your contract (subject to niche availability). All of the other paperwork can be done via mail or electronically.

How will I get to Mid-England Barrow after my death?

Your will or funeral wishes should include instructions as to what you would like to happen in the country where you currently live. For obvious reasons it is cheaper to repatriate ashes, than a body prior to cremation. At Mid-England Barrow we can advise about the instructions required, and arrange repatriation of your ashes for you. If required we can deal with the collection of the ashes from the airport, purchase an urn of your choosing, and transfer the ashes into the urn, placing it safely into the Barrow.

Why would I reserve a niche in the Barrow now when I am fit and healthy?

The Barrow has 168 niches, for the safe keeping of 4-5 urns each. If a niche is reserved for 50 or 99 years now, the time does not start running until the first set of ashes are placed. That way, you are ensuring peace of mind by reserving your niche, but not paying for a period when it is not in use. Payment in full is required to reserve the niche. There is no guarantee how long niches will be available to be reserved.

Can someone come to look at the Barrow on my behalf, and / or choose my niche for me?

Of course, we welcome anyone who would like to see the Barrow, either during our advertised open days, or by private arrangement. If they are planning upon choosing your niche for you, it would be helpful for us to be made aware of this.

“Living in the US this has been a great option for me and the piece of mind that I will return home one day to my little spot at Mid-England barrow. Picking the niche and transferring the payment was made so easy. Working with Sara couldn't of been easier and was kept up to date with everything that was going on from the start of the build to the end wonderful experience all round”- Anne.
